Meeting:
April 10th, 2008 AM
If you’re feeling out of kilter
Don’t know why or what about
Let your feet reveal the answer
Find the sore spot work it out”
by Eunice D. Ingham
Throughout history
cultures have created therapeutic practices of footwork. The oldest evidence
is depicted in ancient Egyptian relics (2330 BC). This form of healing
has been used in countries such as China, India and Japan. North American
Indian tribes are also known to have practiced healing with foot work.
Today we call it Reflexology—but what actually is it?
Feet are like mini-maps
of your body’s anatomy and physiology. By applying pressure to particular
reflex areas on the foot, all the organs and functions within that zone
in your body will benefit.
The instrument used
is the therapist’s own hands. The treatment aims to stimulate the
body’s natural self-healing process and rebuild its energy flow.
Reflexology is a very efficient way to reduce stress, making you feel
deeply relaxed and calm. By treating your symptom and its real cause you
can improve your health and well being.
Let us welcome Armi Sood, reflexologist. She’ll tell us about this
amazing form of foot massage used to treat health problems and boost your
energy. Armi has studied in the UK at ITEC (International Therapy Examination
Council) and has diplomas in Reflexology, Anatomy and Physiology.
Please sign up by
Monday, April 7th with Bente E.
The refreshments will be provided by the members. If you can volunteer,
please notify Bente whether you’ll bring something savory or sweet.
Thank you!
AWC meetings are
held on the second Thursday of each month.
Next Tour:
April 17th AM
We are planning a trip to the Pokrova Orthodox Monastery in Jorvas for
our April tour. The trip includes a one-hour tour of the monastery and
lunch cooked by Father Hariton, who, before becoming a monk, owned highly
reputed restaurants in Helsinki. As there is only one monk preparing the
food, we have to take the same menu. So, we have ordered the least expensive,
but most typically Russian, alternative of borscht soup, smetana and cabbage
pie, sweet coffee bread and coffee or tea.
To realize this trip,
we need 20 participants paid up by the 2nd of April.
This is not a very well-known venue for tourists, so come and find out
about the monastery and the history of its buildings. A few of our members
have been and thoroughly recommend it.

Helsinki Museums
All ten city museums exhibiting the city's history and cultural heritage
are now free. Here are some of the museums and exhibitions that are going
on right now:
Sederholm House: The exhibition, What a Feast!, presents the colorful
and most varied festive traditions in Helsinki.??
City Museum: The Helsinki Horizons exhibition at Helsinki City Museum
creates an overall picture of the city in three realms. The Swedish era,
the Russian era and the era of Finnish independence are shown as separate
units, and the fate and fortunes of Helsinki are seen as a part of Finnish
and European history.
Tuomarinkylä Museum (Tuomarinkylä Manor): The Elegance exhibition.
Visitors to the museum have long wished for a cross-section of old interior
design styles in the rooms of Tuomarinkylä Manor. The Elegance exhibition
introduces visitors to a range of styles from baroque to functionalism
using a selection of interiors and choice items representative of a given
style selected from Helsinki City Museum's fine furniture and interior
design object collections.
Theater
Perhaps you've recognized it as a major communicative device used in popular
television programs such as “Lost” or "24." Maybe
you've heard it used on "Emmerdale," or a twisted version of
it on "The Sopranos." It's sweeping Finland as now, too, the
Finn-Brit Players bring us: THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE. Impress your friends
and family with your sharpened listening skills and interest in the arts!
You will become popular and respected! Maybe even taller and thinner.
Go see it. The Finn-Brit players are a Helsinki-based English language
theatre group.
Their next production, After Dinner, is presented March 22 and April 12–13.
After Dinner by Andrew Bovell
Koko Teatteri Narri
Unioninkatu 45 Hietaniemenkatu 9
March 22nd, 2 pm & 7 pm April 12th, 2 pm & 7 pm; April 13th, 2
pm
Synopsis: After Dinner is an ironic black comedy about single life and
hidden desires. Taking place in the 80s, five people converge on a suburban
nightspot to enjoy a meal and the after-dinner entertainment, but as the
evening progresses and tongues loosen, they find out more about themselves
than they would have liked to. "Bovell's text is sharp, clever and
funny. It’s fast paced, with little physical action and thoroughly
engaging comical stories. Bovell's creations are neurotic, complicated
and quite mad." Tickets: €9/€6 group discount for bookings
of five or more. Book online at finnbritplayers.com/afterdinner.
